Despite requests, I basically never--unlike most fashion bloggers--post up photos of what I've been wearing. Why? Not to keep myself shrouded in a romantic mystique; no, I just can't manage to take good photos. I'm not just saying I look ugly. No, the photos truly suck. I tried again yesterday, and look what happened:
See? Horrific. The flash makes a spot in the mirror, the no-flash leaves everything blurry, and taking pictures of oneself is just awkward no matter what.
SO: what do all y'all do? I know I have some pro readers who succeed tremendously in the outfit-photo department. What's your secret? A nifty tripod? A nifty tripod of a boyfriend? My boyfriend, while extremely nice, never took tripod class.
Also, and no less importantly, how do you get over feeling like a total jackass for taking pictures of yourself and putting them on the internet? Do you simply justify it with the very real demand from your eye-candy-hungry readers? Maybe I'm just not cut out for this. Maybe I'll just focus on taking pictures of my cat, which I am very good at.

How Do I Take Outfit Photos?

Hee. For self portraits in the mirror, I turn off the flash, and make sure to hold the camera AGAINST my body to diminish blur. Usually works OK. But I'm also married to a pro photographer, so I've got hidden advantages.
People WANT to see you ... not just because of what you're wearing, but because of what you're writing. It's comforting to put a face and style with a written voice, ya know?
So do you guys like how after claiming to be good at photographing my cat, I put in the blurriest photo ever? Yes, I'm good at self-promotion.
I use a mini tripod I got for $9.95 from Dick Smith.. there are heaps on ebay. sometimes if I'm out somewhere exciting I get my boyfriend or mum to take a picture, but to be honest my tripod & self timer always gets a better shot! then I photoshop the crap out of them to get the colour and lighting I like.
About the whole justification thing, I'm actually still a bit iffy on that. but at the moment my blog really is just there for me. I like looking back on photos of what I wear and the clothes I've owned. if other people find it interesting, they're welcome to read it, but I'm kind of meh about the whole thing. I'm a bit terrified about people I know 'in real life' finding my blog and wondering why the hell I have this website full of pictures of myself... don't really know how to explain that one!
yes ill be there! excited to see your shoes!
don't take the photo in the mirror is my main bit of advice. get your friend to take a picture or something and if you can't find someone else to take the photo, the next best thing is a tripod. i picked mine up for $10 and if you don't want to even shell that much out, there should be a timer on your camera and you can prop it up on something.
Awesome, thanks, ladies! I just googled "mini camera tripod" (why did it take me this long to try that?) and got a ton of results. A Lenmar one on amazon.com looked good, until I saw this lol-inducing note:
"This Item is out of stock due to a back order situation."
I don't really take outfit photos, as I'm not a "fashion blogger" but I have tried to for Halloween. I look like a blurry jackass though, so I feel your pain, and have absolutely nothing productive to contribute except my sympathy.
