shoes for a reality other than our own
it's alternate-universe shoe day!
THESE popped up in my mailbox this morning, courtesy of my aunt who lives in a tiny new england town but always knows about the best shoes...
no, we are not shoes, we are actually small leather jackets.
then there are THESE pieces of abstract art masquerading as shoes...
basically, you are walking on three rusty nails, one of which actually reaches the ground.
and in conclusion, i give you the eye-candy of kate lanphear hanging out looking awesome during paris fashion week. the connection here is that she's also wearing weird toe-less shoes. but really i just think she looks casually, weirdly, perfectly fabulous.
i'll throw in louise ebel on the right (also despite her weird shoes), because she is so damned cute.

extra dressing
The real reason I started writing/photographing/blogspotting here was to explore the idea of fashion as an intrinsic part of our society and our personal lives. Not to chronicle runways or to talk about the latest shade of coral, but to examine, critique and appreciate (albeit with a lot of slang and capital letters and general snarkiness) the role fashion plays in our lives. But I don't get deep into it nearly enough, really; the subject of why we wear what we wear and hearing different people's takes on it is endlessly fascinating.
Sooo... I don't normally cut and paste here, but on that note, I'm so inspired by Rumi of fashiontoast, who makes the case for "dressing bravely," taking the focus off "who's looking at me?!?" and making fashion into joy. Look:
I get a lot of questions in regards to the "braveness" to dress any way you want to in the public eye..be it the grocery store, school, party, etc...and where I get the confidence to wear this or that.
My outlook has always been that people in the streets aren't dressing to please me, why should I take them into account when dressing myself? Playing with clothes is one of the most basic pleasures in life along with other stupid crap like peeling nail polish off in single sheets, crawling into a sun warmed car, and laughing about nothing and everything. If I were to die tomorrow I would be glad that I wore a slightly inappropriate coat and five inch heels to a deserted train station in the middle of the day. You know what I mean?
looovvvve.

When is a Doc not a Doc?
...when it's a Marais vegan army boot!
Found these via a Refinery29 piece on vegan shoes. I'm not vegan, and I wouldn't make a good vegan (love eggs and yogurt too much!), but I do support keeping animals alive, and I'd be morrrre than happy to keep animals alive by owning these fabulous boots.
Doc Martens-inspired, but mod and sleek and quirky and awesome.
Luurrrrrve.

there's something about fendi
[Fendi : Fall RTW 2010 via WWD]
Something about this look just grabs me and won't let me go. I'm captivated by how Lagerfeld took disparate, far-out-there elements (giant fur necklace! suede pants! mustard suede platforms! a shiny cape thing!) and somehow created an elegant, harmonious, possibly even classic ensemble (yes, classic, despite a giant fur necklace. Though, come to think of it, ladies have been slinging fur around their necks for centuries.).
Let's just go do the fashion math here:
Lace-up, skintight suede leggings
+
Peasant blouse tunic thing
+
Mussed Victorian pompadour
=
Genius.

thoughts on fanny packs.
The other day in Vegas (good opener, no?), I was talking to Ryan from Cardboard Robot about fanny packs. I thought it wasn't fair that only the hopelessly fashion-forward Asian tourists get permission to wear fanny packs without mocking. It may have something to do with the fact that they're the only ones who fork over the necessary cash for Gucci fanny packs.
In any case, I would kind of LOVE a fanny pack. So handy! Won't slip off your shoulder! Both hands free for full-contact shopping/phone holding/wild gesturing! Instead of looking at me like I'd just admitted I like eating babies, Ryan agreed and revealed that Cardboard Robot actually MADE a fanny pack a few seasons ago. Apparently, it didn't sell. Can't imagine why... but now I'm intent upon acquiring one of the unsold f-packs. I'm convinced that, with enough confidence and self-deprecation, I can successfully rock a pack on my fanny.
Which means it will be time to confront this hater baby.
